Creating Pahiyas: A Philippines Harvest Tradition Art-Making Workshop

August 12, 2015 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, 1100 W. Allen St., Bloomington, IN | 4-5pm

FREE, pre-register by calling Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard (812) 339-5887 or stephanie@mhcfoodpantry.org

During this family-friendly workshop, participants will help make Pahiyas Festa House creations, a Filipino cultural tradition. Pahiyas, a harvest celebration, dates back to the 16th century and involves elaborate, food-based decorations. Participants will learn more about this colorful tradition and will use high-pigment markers to color plastic materials from recycled milk jugs, inspired by Pahiyas practices. In addition, regional food inspirations will be included to bridge local and global cultural connections.

All materials made during this workshop will be part of larger displays in the FREE Lotus Arts Village at the 22nd annual Lotus World Music & Arts Festival (Sept. 25-26). Light refreshments included.
