First Friday Gallery Walk

June 2, 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

BIO

Michelle Solorzano was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She lived in New York for nine years before moving to Bloomington, Indiana, where she is currently working towards her Master of Fine Arts in Ceramics from the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design at Indiana University. In 2019, she received her BFA in Painting and Ceramics from the State University of New York at Potsdam.

ARTIST STATEMENT

My work is a reflection on my experience as a latinx immigrant in the United States. Similar to many immigrants, one of the biggest challenges for me has been to assimilate to American culture and social norms. Being an immigrant involves being hyper aware of your adopted and assigned identities/labels. This hyper awareness creates an inner tension that I am interested in exploring by intentionally inviting my audience to confront the work from specific points of view.

I am using personification and surrealism as tools to deliver autobiographical narratives. Immigration creates a psychological and physical distance between where we are born and where we are now. I have curated a set of symbols/elements to draw from and put together like a puzzle. The chosen symbols are inspired by everyday items, the figure, flora and fauna. Most of these elements stem from past memories growing up in the Dominican Republic that had a significant impact in my life, while others are still present in my everyday life.

Play and humor serve an important role in my surreal stories through the use of exaggeration of scale and stylization of forms. With my work, I am also researching and reflecting on the history of the Dominican Republic and pre-columbian taino art. My work aims to honor my people, culture and heritage.
