Zar Electrik
Zar Electrik is a marriage of Gnawa trances, sub-Saharan loops, and bewitching techno. Anass Zine, Arthur Peneau, and Did Miosine take us on a captivating trip to the Maghreb, with vocals that are by turns enchanting or roaring, and with an instrumental mix that includes gumbri (a three-stringed bass lute), oud, and electric kora. Behind the voices, the call to dance comes from driving rhythms and electronica: it can be a dizzying spin, with trance-like, echoing, universal grooves. “Zar Electrik’s sonic blend is rich and vibrant and takes you on a transcending journey between the Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the West.… The result is simply spectacular” (Vancouver Folk Music Festival).
