The Yandong Grand Singers perform in a unique polyphonic acappella vocal style that has been designated a masterpiece of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The Dong people, who don’t have a written language of their own, transmit much of their history, culture, and knowledge through songs that accompany them throughout their lives. As the Dong say, “Food feeds the body – but songs feed the soul,” and choirs of children, youth, and seniors are part of every village. The Yandong Grand Singers come from Yandong township in Southwestern China’s Guizhou province; when they are not bringing their bright voices and harmonies to audience around the world, they are farmers.
