Alash Paoli Performance

March 19, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

Black Vulture Project, nonprofit Community Arts Organization in Paoli, and the Lotus Education & Arts Foundation of Bloomington will be hosting a performance by Alash, Tuvan Throat Singers at First Presbyterian Church in Paoli just following the dinner @ 7:00pm (doors at 6:30pm). The performance is FREE and is open to the public.

Alash is a trio of master throat singers (xöömeizhi) from Tuva, a tiny republic in the heart of Central Asia. Grounded in the art of throat singing (xöömei), originally created by nomadic people of Central Asia, Alash’s members started training in traditional Tuvan music as children.  The group first formed while students at Kyzyl Arts College; influenced by Western music trends coming out of North America, they practiced on hybrid Tuvan-European instruments. Under the guidance of Kongar-ool Ondar (best known to western audiences for his role in the film Genghis Blues), the musicians forged a new identity by introducing instruments like the guitar and Russian bayan (accordion) to traditional Tuvan arrangements.

Presented by the IU Inner Asian and Uralic National Resource Center.
