IU Archives of Traditional Music
Hoagy Carmichael Room, Morrison Hall 006
FREE

Take a deeper dive into Lotus on this guided tour! Elise Anderson and Douglas Peach, PhD students in the IU Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology, will look at the 2017 Festival lineup through a scholar’s lens, complete with vibrant audio and video.  Learn more about the artists’ homelands and cultures, explore their musical influences, and hear some of the rich stories and histories that helped shape what you’ll hear on Festival Weekend.

Elise Anderson is a candidate for dual Ph.D. degrees in Folklore & Ethnomusicology and Central Eurasian Studies at Indiana University. Her research focuses broadly on the performing arts of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang, or Chinese Central Asia. She has spent extensive time living and conducting ethnomusicological research abroad and is currently writing a dissertation about the institutionalization of Uyghur music based on more than 30 months of field and archival research in China and Sweden. Elise, who moonlights as a translator, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and dancer, plans to pursue a career in academia.

Douglas Peach is a PhD graduate student in the Department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University.  His research explores issues of heritage tourism, diaspora, and music primarily with Gullah Geechee communities in coastal South Carolina.  He is the former Folklife and Traditional Arts Program Director at McKissick Museum (University of South Carolina) and the South Carolina Arts Commission, and is the co-author (with Henry Glassie and Clifford Murphy) of Ola Belle Reed and Southern Mountain Music on the Mason-Dixon Line.

Memorial and Goodbody Hall are under construction . . . but don’t be dissuaded!  Just walk around the fences, but if coming from the south, walking east around the Memorial Hall construction is generally easier.  Click for information on parking near Morrison Hall.

The ATM Noon Concert and Lecture Series is a forum for the presentation and discussion of music and culture. Entertaining and educational, the series features performances and lecture/demonstrations by musicians and scholars from around the world and from the local community. The series provides an opportunity for university and local community members to gather and celebrate the diversity of music and culture in the world.  Click for more information about the IU Archives of Traditional Music.
